Paving sand needs to compact evenly so pavers do not settle unevenly a year down the track. Sandpit sand needs to be washed and clean. They are not interchangeable, and buying the closest thing at hand tends to cost more in the end.

Which sand for which job?
Coastal Brick Sand and Ivory Brick Sand are both fine, light-coloured sands for bricklaying, rendering and mortar mixes — the difference is mostly colour, which matters when you are matching existing mortar. For paver bedding, 5mm Crusher Dust generally outperforms sand because it compacts harder and holds its level. If you are laying pavers and were about to order sand, it is worth a phone call first.
How much sand do I need?
For paver bedding, work on 30mm of depth — one cubic meter covers roughly 33 square meters. For bricklaying, a rough rule is one cubic meter of sand per thousand bricks, though it varies with joint width. Use our calculator or call us on 1300 21 21 11.
