The township itself is up on the rise; the ground below it floods, and everyone who gardens down there knows it.

It is Zone 3 on our valley run. Because it is a long trip we book a delivery window with you at the time of ordering instead of promising a next-morning drop, and we run the valley seven days a week.

Soil & site conditions

The flats carry deep alluvial soil laid down by the Yarra over a very long time — dark, fertile and far deeper than anything on the surrounding hills. It is genuinely good ground, and on the flats the honest advice is usually to feed and mulch what you have rather than import a growing medium over the top of it. The qualification is drainage: this is a floodplain, the water table comes up in winter, and a bed dug low will sit wet. On the township rise the profile changes to the ordinary clay loam over clay of the valley sides.

The township is easy — sealed streets, ordinary driveways, room to tip. Out on the flats it is rural work: long unsealed drives, gates, and ground that becomes genuinely soft after the winter rain, in a way that flat ground elsewhere does not. A loaded tipper will bog on a wet river flat, so if there is any doubt we tip at the gate or on the road rather than attempt the drive. Tell us the surface and the conditions when you order, particularly between June and September.
